Organized in 1859 and 1860 a few of the companies of the 13th regiment had been formed as Militia perhaps in response to reaction to the John Brown Raid. These companies were named for the counties in which they were formed, of which the Sussex Light Dragoons were one of these militia units. The militia units invariably included many relatives within their companies.

The Sussex Light Dragoons were formed prior to the beginning of the war, and they became Company H, of the Thirteenth Virginia Cavalry.  The Sussex Light Dragoons were a wealthy organization, well educated, and each member of the company had his own servant along with him. The unit started out with all the comforts of home, bedding, cooking gear, etc. It did not take long for them to realize their mistake. Servants were sent home along with all of the creature comforts they had been accustomed. They carried only what was required and that which could be carried on horse.

About us, we are a re-enacting unit portraying to the best of our abilities and as accurately as we can, the 13th Virginia Cavalry, Co. H, Sussex Light Dragoons. We are made up of several families and treat this as a hobby that the entire family can enjoy. Our members are from Virginia, Maryland, and Delaware.

We are anticipating a great few years of re-enacting ahead of us with the 150th anniversaries closely upon us! If you are interested in our unit feel free to contact us. You do not need to have a horse to be part of this unit. If you are interested check out our recruiting page.

We hope that you enjoy this website. We have information about our unit, and the history of this distinguished unit from Sussex County, Va.
